Determining if your child might benefit from special education services can be a challenge. Navigating the Special Education System can cause confusion and frustration. But “help is there,” said Seton Academy certified special education teacher Carole Laskey, who will lead a free community lecture titled “A Parent’s Guide to Special Education: Advocacy, Communication & Planning,” on March 12th from 7 pm to 8 pm.

“A Parent’s Guide to Special Education: Advocacy, Communication & Planning,” is part of a series of ongoing behavioral health related lectures that are offered to the community free of charge with no associated obligation, by the professional staff of Hall-Brooke Behavioral Health Services.

“Helping parents of children with special needs to enhance their involvement in their children’s education, development, and transition is critical. “As a special education and career education teacher at  Seton Academy, a state approved private special education school for commuting students, I know that special education, like all academic subject areas, has some specific language, and criteria for services that are different from what some parents may initially think.” Ms. Laskey, a certified English teacher, school social worker and licensed clinical social worker comments that “A little introduction about what to ask and expect might be just what parents need to forge positive, successful relationships with school districts; that’s what school districts really want as well.”

This informative forum will take place in the community room of Hall-Brooke, 47 Long Lots Road. Hall-Brooke is a wholly owned subsidiary of St. Vincent’s Health Services and Seton Academy is an affiliate. For more information contact Jeanne Hoff 203.341.4532
