Surgical Oncology

Surgical oncologists at the Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care at St. Vincent’s Medical Center are engaged in diagnosing, staging and treating a range of cancers. Their mission is to help you and your loved ones to better manage certain cancer-related symptoms.

Whether you or your loved ones are candidates for surgery depends on many factors. These factors include type, size, location, grade and stage of the tumor, and general health factors: age, physical fitness and other additional medical conditions. At St. Vincent’s, surgery may be combined with other cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy or hormone therapy. These nonsurgical treatments may be administered before surgery (neoadjuvant therapy) or after surgery (adjuvant therapy) to help prevent cancer growth, spread or recurrence.
