Bio

Dr. Matthew Jaffa is a neurologist who specializes in caring for critically ill patients hospitalized with acute brain injuries, such as ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury. In addition to providing care in the neurocritical care unit at Hartford Hospital he serves as the co-founder and associate director of the NeuroRecovery Clinic. The development of the NeuroRecovery Clinic at Hartford Healthcare’s Ayer Neuroscience Institute stems from the recognition that many severely brain injured patients require continued comprehensive and multidisciplinary care even after discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU). Through collaboration between our medical team, patients, and their families we hope to help guide individuals through the complexities of physical, emotional, and psychological recovery on the road to their fullest potential and well-being.

Dr. Jaffa’s research interests focus on quality of life (QoL) following acute brain injury, specifically exploring pain, sleep disturbance, and psychosocial recovery following subarachnoid hemorrhage. Additionally, he is interested in communication and shared decision making (SDM) and has published a textbook on the topic with Dr. David Hwang.
