Residency Program
SVMC offers a one-year Nurse Residency Program for all registered nurses transitioning from academia to professional nursing practice; or have less than one year of experience as a registered nurse in an acute care setting.
Orientation Programs
As a new member of our SVMC nursing community, you will begin your Patient Care Services Orientation (PCSO) with information specific to your role. Our goal and objectives are to provide you with a competency based orientation that is comprehensive and equally addresses your individual needs and interests. Each of the clinical specialties at SVMC is supported by a Nurse Manager and Nursing Professional Development Specialist dedicated to develop your skills in the respective clinical settings.
Clinical Education
Our clinical education programs supplement the initial onboarding and training provided during the orientation phase. Web-based learning, live and virtual core curriculum classes and simulation are available for both new and current SVMC colleagues. Continuing Education Credit is available for many professional development programs.

Our theoretical framework for professional practice is built on Patricia Benner’s model.
The LOP-ACE is designed to reward Registered Nurse exemplars who have submitted professional portfolios demonstrating their excellence in clinical practice, professional development and volunteerism.
Nursing Certification
St. Vincent’s Medical Center encourages all nurses who provide care to become certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Nursing certification validates that nurses have met stringent requirements for knowledge and experience and are qualified to provide competent specialty care.

Nursing Research
SVMC is a member of the HHC Nursing Research, Quality Improvement and Evidence Based Practice Council. This system wide council endorses a step-by-step process for SVMC staff members and Graduate Students seeking to conduct research, evidence based practice and quality improvement projects.
